>> Rachel: It’s Folktales Week and today we’re continuing the Wabanaki story of Glooscap. Glooscap has had a lot of victories … but an old woman has just told him there might be ONE person he can’t beat.
And he can’t believe that!
“Who is it that you think is more mighty than me!” he hollered.
“He’s called Wasis. But I don’t think I’d challenge him if I were you.”
But Glooscap was stubborn.
“Where can I find Wasis!”
Switch to the other side of the top of your mouth, and give your tongue a brush too.
The old lady told Glooscap to follow her. They entered a home and Glooscap looked around for this mighty Wasis.
But the only person he could see was a baby, sucking on a piece of candy and singing a song to himself. (SFX giggling)
“Glooscap, this is Wasis.”
Glooscap laughed. “A baby? A baby can’t defeat me!”
Glooscap smiled at the baby. He hadn’t ever HAD a baby and didn’t know anything about how to talk to babies, but how hard could it be?
“Wasis, come here!” Glooscap said.
Switch to the bottom of your mouth, and make little circles with your brush around each tooth
The baby smiled back but didn’t move. (SFX baby giggling)
Glooscap whistled to the baby, to make it come to him. But the baby still didn’t move. (SFX baby sneezing)
Glooscap used his bossiest voice. “Wasis, I said COME HERE!”
But instead of coming to Glooscap, Wasis began to HOWL. (SFX howling) Glooscap had scared the baby!
Switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth, and brush your front teeth too
Wasis cried so loudly that Glooscap couldn’t hear himself think! He tried magical spells, and beautiful songs, but nothing could quiet the baby. (SFX howling)
Finally, Glooscap was fed up. “I quit!” He ran from the house.
Wasis quieted down and smiled again. “Goo goo” he said.
And to this very day, Wabanaki people say that when a baby says “goo goo” he remembers the time that he defeated the mighty Glooscap!
Thats a wrap on Chompers tonight, you did a great job brushing. Get some good sleep, but first don’t forget to…
