[THEME SONG BEGINS]

>> RACHEL: Hey there! Let’s get toothbrushing, because it’s time for Chompers, your morning and night toothbrushing show.

Start brushing on the top of your mouth. Pick a side, and brush all the way to the molars in the back.

>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 brush!

>> RACHEL: It’s Senses Week, and tonight we've got more riddles.

Here’s your first one:

If I tell you that’s too hot

Don’t touch it with your finger

If I tell you that’s too cold

You might just get a shiver!

What am I? Shout it out:

[MUSIC BEGINS]

>> GROUP:: The sense of temperature!

>> RACHEL: The sense of temperature.

Switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>> RACHEL: -and brush your front teeth too.

The sense of temperature, or if you want to use the big word, thermoception, is what makes us feel if something is hot…

[SIZZLE]

>> RACHEL: -cold…

[TEETH CHATTER]

>> RACHEL: -or somewhere in the middle. Our body needs to stay at a special temperature so they can work well.

For example, if you sit next to a fire, thousands of tiny cells from your body, send a temperature message to your brain, and your brain tells you that you feel warmth. If that’s what your body needs it’d tell you, stay close! If your body needs to cool down, it’d tell you to back up.

[MUSIC ENDS]

>> RACHEL: Switch to the bottom of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>> RACHEL: -and keep on brushing.

Here’s your next riddle:

I help you take care

And I really am a good friend

Even though I can be a pain

And could hurt you again

What is this? Shout it out!

[MUSIC BEGINS]

>> GROUP: The sense of pain.

>> RACHEL: The sense of pain.

Switch your brushing to the other side of the bottom of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>> RACHEL: -and brush the inside, outside and chewing side of each tooth.

The sense of pain - or if you want to use the big word, nociception - is what makes us feel pain.

>> MAN: OUCH!

>> RACHEL: And pain might not be a great feeling, but it is an important signal. It tells us our body needs attention because something is wrong. When you hurt yourself, thousands of tiny cells from your body sends a message to your brain that says, “THIS IS PAINFUL,” so that you know something needs fixing.
