>> Rachel: It’s Folktales Week and tonight we’re going to solve the puzzle in our Hausa folktale.
Remember, a man is leaving home, and he’s got all of his belongings with him. He has:
A leopard.
SFX LEOPARD
A goat
SFX GOAT
And a yam
SFX YAM
The man begins to travel. Everything is going well until he gets to a river.
SFX ROARING RIVER
And here’s where things get sticky.
Switch to the other side of the top of your mouth and keep brushing.
He has to get his leopard SFX LEOPARD, his goat SFX GOAT, and his yam SFX YAM across the river, but he can only take one at a time.
The man sits down and thinks for a minute. (SFX) If he takes over the goat, then the yam, and then goes back to get the leopard, the goat will eat the yam while he’s crossing back over the river.
If he takes the goat over, and THEN the leopard, the leopard will definitely eat the goat.
Switch to the bottom of your mouth, and brush the molars in the way back
He steps carefully into the river, with the goat on his back. He looks behind him, and sees the leopard lying in the sun, ignoring the yam. Cats don’t eat yams!
The man crosses the river and sets his goat on the shore. Then he wades back through the water and picks up his yam. The goat’s eyes get big - the goat is going to get a snack!
But instead of setting down the yam where the goat can eat it, the man picks the goat up again and carries it back across the river to the first side!
Switch your brushing to the other side of the bottom of your mouth, but don't brush too hard
The goat baaa aaaas with disappointment (SFX DISAPPOINTED GOAT) as the man drops it on the first side of the river.
The man then picks the leopard up, and crosses over to the second side of the river. He puts the leopard down next to the yam, and the leopard stretches its legs and yawns. Because, as you recall, cats don’t eat yams!
The man then crosses to the first side of the river again, picks up the goat and brings it over to the second side. And then all of his belongings are together again, nobody had eaten anybody, and the man can continue his journey.
That’s it for Chompers tonight! Time to…
